There's one trait German is famous and infamous for worldwide: you can simply glue words together until they're too long to fit on a single line. Other languages need a whole sentence for the same idea. German builds a single word instead. The most famous of these word-monsters was an actual law, and it was abolished in 2013. Here's the story of the longest German word, which one is truly the longest, and why exactly these words become a problem for machine translation.
The record holder: A Beef Law

This word was a law of the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from 1999. It regulated the delegation of duties for monitoring beef labeling a response to the BSE crisis, "mad cow disease." In 2013 it was repealed because an EU requirement no longer applied, and with it disappeared the unofficially longest word in official German.
Break it apart and it suddenly makes sense that's exactly the trick behind German compound nouns:

Is it in the dictionary?
No, and this is where it gets interesting. The official German dictionary, the Duden, doesn't include administrative monsters like this. The longest word actually listed in the Duden is far tamer:

The reason: the Duden records words in general use. Technical terms and legal titles can theoretically be extended indefinitely in German so they don't count as "words" in the dictionary sense. Almost anything is linguistically possible; only a fraction is lexically recognized.
And the famous Danube steamship word?
The classic:
Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän (42 letters, "Danube steamship company captain") shows up on every schoolyard and can be extended indefinitely: add -switwe ("-widow") or -mütze ("-cap") and it gets even longer.
That's exactly the point: words like this aren't fixed vocabulary but constructions. They're invented on the spot, in the moment of speaking. Which is why, strictly speaking, there's no single "longest German word", only the longest one someone has actually used officially.
The real world record: 79 letters from Vienna
If you simply count letters, an even longer word-monster beats the beef law. The Guinness Book of Records listed this behemoth in 1996 as the longest German word ever published:

It supposedly denoted a sub-association for officials of the head office of the electrical services of the Viennese Danube Steamship Company — a linguistic curiosity from the pre-war era that served more as a tongue-twister than a genuine administrative term.
But the longest compound noun actually used officially is a different word. Considered the longest word in "serious" use is a legal regulation with 67 letters:

The pattern is clear: nearly all of Germany's record words come from law and administration. Precisely where precision matters most, the language screws term onto term — and precisely there is where these words later land on a specialist translator's desk.
The secret of the linking letters: the "Fugen-s"
Look closely and you'll notice something odd: small letters often appear between the building blocks that aren't part of any of the individual words. In Donauschifffahrt or Arbeitsamt, an s sits there that seems to come from nowhere. These connectors are called Fugenelemente (linking elements) the best known being the Fugen-s and they join the parts of a compound.
The tricky part: there are barely any fixed rules for when a Fugen-s is inserted and when it isn't. Schweinebraten (roast pork) doesn't have one; Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) does. Native speakers add it intuitively; learners and machines regularly get it wrong. For German grammar, linking elements are one of the subtlest problem areas there is and another reason why automatically breaking down long compounds is so error-prone.
What Mark Twain said about German words
No article on long German words gets past Mark Twain. In his essay "The Awful German Language" (1880), the American writer mocked the German habit of stringing nouns together endlessly. His most famous line on the subject:

Twain mockingly called such compounds "alphabetical processions." What drove him to despair remains, to this day, the core task of every specialist German to English translation: unpacking a single German word into a whole, correctly ordered English sentence, without losing a single building block of meaning along the way.
Why word-monsters break other languages
For translators, these compounds aren't just a party trick, they're daily work, and a reason machine translation stumbles more often in German than in other languages.
1. The word first has to be taken apart
A translation engine has to split a compound word into its components before it can even understand it. With Fußbodenschleifmaschinenverleih (floor sanding machine rental), splitting it in the wrong place can completely distort the meaning. Humans recognize the seams intuitively; machines guess.
2. The word order flips
In German, the base word comes last: a Rindfleischetikettierung is a type of labeling, not a type of beef. Translated into English or French, the order has to be completely reversed and unpacked into several words. With short compounds this happens automatically, but with long technical chains in contracts and technical manuals, this is exactly where mistakes creep in.
3. New words that appear in no dictionary
Because German lets you form new compounds at any time, translators constantly run into words that never existed before, especially in technology, law, and administration. No dictionary and no training dataset knows them. A human specialist translator works out the meaning from context; an algorithm has no basis for that.
Rule of thumb: the longer and more specialized a German compound noun, the bigger the quality gap between machine and professional translation and the more expensive a mistake becomes.
