OTTIAQ Certified Translator in Montreal and Across Quebec

PoliLingua provides certified translation services for Quebec through a network of OTTIAQ certified translators. Each translation is signed and sealed by a member of the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec, and prepared for submission to MIFI, the SAAQ, universities, courts and professional orders. Our service covers civil status records, academic documents, immigration files, driver's licences and legal documents, translated into French or English from over 200 languages. Every project follows our ISO 17100:2015 certified process, with a second linguist verifying names, dates and figures before delivery.

Finding an OTTIAQ Certified Translator in Montreal

PoliLingua works exclusively with members of OTTIAQ, the association responsible for certifying translators in Quebec. Membership confirms a translator's qualifications and professional standing, but does not cover availability, rates or delivery times. PoliLingua manages that process for you. We match your documents with an OTTIAQ member qualified in your language pair, confirm the price and delivery date in advance, and coordinate files involving several languages through a single point of contact.

What OTTIAQ Certification Guarantees

OTTIAQ is the professional order governing translators, terminologists and interpreters in Quebec. It has a legal mandate to protect the public and represents approximately 3,000 members.

A translation signed by an OTTIAQ member provides:

  • A Protected Professional Title. Only members may use the title of certified translator (traducteur agréé) in Quebec.
  • An Officially Recognised SSeal. The member's seal and signature give the translation its official value.
  • Ethical Obligations. Members are bound by a code of ethics and must maintain their professional competence.
  • Professional Accountability. The translator is answerable to the order for the quality of the work.

As OTTIAQ certifies individuals rather than companies, every PoliLingua quote identifies the translator responsible for your file.

MIFI Translation Requirements

The Ministère de l'Immigration, de la Francisation et de l'Intégration (MIFI) accepts translations signed by a recognised professional translator and returns files that do not meet its format rules. Each translation must:

  • Bear the translator's name and seal
  • Translate every element of the original, including stamps, seals and signatures
  • Be submitted as the original of the complete translation
  • Be stapled to the corresponding document

Please note that translators are not recognised by MIFI as authorities for certifying true copies of original documents. Where a certified true copy is required, it must be obtained from a recognised authority. This is confirmed at the quotation stage.

Certified Translation Prices in Quebec

There is no regulated price schedule for certified translation in Quebec. OTTIAQ governs the profession but does not set fees. Montreal agencies typically start at around CAD 80 for a short document. PoliLingua prices start at CAD 80 for short documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates and police records. Longer documents are priced per word. All prices are fixed in your quote before work begins.

The final price depends on:

  • Language pair: common pairs such as Spanish or Italian cost less than Arabic, Persian or Mandarin
  • Volume: single-page certificates are charged at a flat rate, longer documents per word
  • Legibility: handwritten or low-quality scans require additional processing time
  • Deadline: urgent delivery is subject to a surcharge
  • Delivery format: paper originals sent by courier incur shipping costs

Submitting all documents for an application in a single request allows us to quote the complete file at a better overall rate.

Turnaround Times

Short documents are delivered in as little as 24 hours. Longer files, less common languages and courier delivery of paper originals require additional time. The confirmed delivery date is stated in your quote.

For applications with a fixed MIFI deadline, please indicate the date when placing your order and the file will be scheduled accordingly.

Certified vs Notarized Translation

In Quebec, a certified translation is one signed and sealed by an OTTIAQ member, and this seal gives it official value. MIFI does not require notarization of translations completed in Quebec. A notary is only necessary if the receiving institution explicitly requests it.

The term sworn translation applies to several European jurisdictions and is not used in Quebec.
