Zulu language and people
The Zulu language is one of the eleven official languages in South Africa, spoken by 24% of the population. The most distinctive features of Zulu include the use of click consonants (c: dental, q: alveolar and x: lateral), use of tone, and an abundance of proverbs and idioms.
Zulu is characterized by respectful terms of address for elders and seniors, called hlonipha. In this respect, terms like baba (father) and mama (mother) are used not only to address one’s parents but also other senior men and women in the community.
Zulu people are a branch of the southern Bantu and have close ethnic, linguistic and cultural ties with the Swazi and Xhosa. They currently make up approximately 20% of the South African population.
