One of the languages we are proud to work with is Rohingya, a language spoken by the Rohingya people who live in Rakhine State of Myanmar.
Rohingya people and language overview
The Rohingya are a minority of about 800,000 people among the 55 million inhabitants of Myanmar, formerly Burma. Located in the far west of the country, their main settlement area, Kachin Province, is in contact with Bangladesh. Like the Bangladeshis, the Rohingyas are Indo-European in language and type, as well as Muslim in religion, which distinguishes them from the vast majority of Burmese, who are Buddhist speaking a Sino-Tibetan language.
Most Rohingyas were encouraged to migrate from densely populated Bengal during the period of British colonization to occupy available agricultural land in neighboring Burma, also under British rule. Their presence has never really been accepted by the majority of the Burmese population and political class, who see them as immigrants who do not belong to the Burmese nation. While armed rebellion movements among the Rohingya were developing at the time of Burma’s independence, the Burmese army carried out operations aimed at terrorizing the people and sending them back to Bangladesh. This situation continues to this day. The last major military campaign was launched in 2012, following violent clashes between Rohingyas and Buddhists, resulting in the displacement of over one hundred thousand people. Counter-guerrilla operations based on territorial control and population displacement continue to date in Kachin state.
To date, there is no sign of a solution, or even of a significant easing of the situation, to this deep and lasting crisis, which is fraught with humanitarian disasters.
