The Bengali people and language overview
Bangladesh (officially called the People's Republic of Bangladesh) is a country in South Asia in the northeastern part of the Indian subcontinent; Limited to the south by the Bay of Bengal, the country is almost entirely landlocked by northeast India and has a short border with Myanma. The country's area is 147,570 km², roughly half that of Italy. The capital and largest city of the country is Dhaka (about 9 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area).
The overwhelming majority of the people of Bangladesh are Bengalis, but the term for all the inhabitants of the country is Bangladeshi, of whatever origin. The Bengalis are descended from the Indo-Aryans who migrated to the country from the West thousands of years ago and who mixed up with the indigenous groups. The Bengalis occupy the lower valleys of the Ganges and the Brahmaputra and make up the extreme eastward advance of the Indo-Iranian languages.
The national and official language is Bengali, an Indo-European language (Indo-Iranian group) spoken as a mother tongue by 80% of the population, but by 98% if the second language is included. It is therefore one of the most linguistically homogeneous countries in the world. The Bengali language is called Bangla in Bangladesh. Some Bengali words can be compared to other Indo-European languages such as Sanskrit (Indo-Iranian), Latin (Italic), English (Germanic) and French (Romance).
Bengali is spoken not only in Bangladesh but also in India, particularly in the states of West Bengal, Orissa, Assam, Bihar and Tripura, but in India, Bengalis practice the Brahmanist religion. There are also Bengalis in Nepal and Bhutan. In India, Bengali is the regional official language of West Bengal and the State of Tripura; the Bengali language is also spoken in Cachar district of Assam state. Numerically, Bengali remains one of the most important languages. In fact, Bengali is the 6th language in the world by the number of native speakers living outside the country of origin (242 million people) after Mandarin Chinese (908 million), Spanish (442 million), English (348 million), Hindi-Urdu (329 million) and Arabic (290 million).
