Country & Language

Fiji, officially the Republic of Fiji, is an archipelago of more than 330 islands, of which 110 are permanently inhabited, and more than 500 islets, amounting to a total land area of about 18,300 square kilometers. The country has one of the most developed economies in the Pacific due to an abundance of forest, mineral, and fish resources. Today, the main sources of foreign exchange are its tourist industry and sugar exports.

Fijian language is an Austronesian language of the Malayo-Polynesian family spoken in Fiji. It has about half a million language speakers. The 1997 Constitution established Fijian as an official language of Fiji, along with English and Hindustani, and there is discussion about establishing it as the “national language”.
The standard Fijian is based on the language of Bau, which is an East Fijian language.
